Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

1950s Tom Nash, Norfolk - FSC Flatford Mill

My earliest memories of the FSC were all at Flatford. Jim Bingley's children were friends of mine, and we used to rove through the Centre, even into the kitchen.

The route across the lock was our highway to the other side. The Bingleys lived in the Farmhouse, and we used to play in the boys bedroom, the Solar. One dark evening quite early in the 1950s, Prince Philip arrived by helicopter; I don't know what the occasion was. In 1953, the great flood, Mrs. Bingley rang us to tell us that the water was up to the AGA rail. In the winter, the meadows on the North side were often flooded for skating.
Since then, I have been on art courses there, and taught, as an Associate Tutor.
